Unexpected Surprises

I will be reprinting stories that show how we can take control over the unexpected occurrences in our lives by continuously having the "right" attitude. Following is such a story: (Please feel free to submit such examples to me for reprinting. If you have a URL I will link your story back to your site as long as it does not have any inappropriate material or is overly commercial in scope.)

Positive out look in life is essential for greater joy in life. It's like taking our blinder off. We have choices in every situation in our lives. We can let these choices destroy or strengthen us.

Just four days ago I had a very unexpected surprise in my life. My husband and I were at the Emergency room with our very sick seven year old at 3:30 AM. We really didn't know what she had. To our surprise we were told she has Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes had never crossed our mind.

We were so thrown off guard! I knew almost nothing about diabetes other than that diabetics have to inject themselves with insulin and they can't have sugar or very little of it.

I have a passion for learning but to learn about diabetes was not one of those things I had planned to learn so soon. But these past four days I have learned what diabetes is, the two types of diabetes, how to take care of someone with diabetes, how to take glucose count, the symptoms of diabetes, how to administer insulin, learn the ratio of insulin to carbs intake.... etc. Does the knowledge of our seven year old having Type 1 effected us? Absolutely! It will effect us financially, the way we eat , the we cook, our schedules... and in everything!

I figured we have two choices. We could look at it as the most unfortunate thing that could happen to us or be grateful that we live in a time where technology is so incredibly advance and we are not alone. I take the latter! Like the saying goes, "When we are given lemons, make lemonade." Yes we were shocked but it has been an incredible four days for us to learn how we can best help our daughter to live a life of health and vigor with her condition.

It is a choice we make to let those "Unexpected Surprises" either to let them destroy us or let it become a strength to us. Life is too short , so why not make the very best of it no matter what unexpected surprises comes your way!

The Rain Will Fall

A soft wet mist engulfs the city

As a blue sky fades into a sad shade of gray.

A dark and dreary rain descends

As the sun successfully hides from the day.

The wind howls like a wounded beast

As it swoops down with its twists and its swirls

Leading dead leaves in a frantic dance

And so another day unfurls.

The cold clammy fingers of the day overcomes you

As your happy dreams sadly fade away.

Your life seems so very dark and dreary

As you hopelessly try to hide from the day.

Your thoughts reach out for a shapeless past

As you retrace your life's twists and turns

In your frantic search to find yourself

Your day begins and your heart still yearns.

Be still, take heart, reflect a while.

For soon this will pass and then you will know

That behind that tragic mask you wear,

As behind the wind, the cold and the snow

That the sun still shines and the birds still sing.

For this sadness you feel befalls us all.

No one, as yet has lived untouched,

Because into each life some rain must fall.

It Brings Down The Great

Ominous and powerful, it brings down the great.

No ones immune, it doesn't discriminate.

It can't be held and it can't be seen.

But it leaves devastation wherever it's been.

Oh, the accolades you could have had

For all those accomplishments you wanted so bad.

But you let it in and you gave it life,

And it cut you down as if using a knife.

You knew what you wanted. You knew what to do.

Nothing could stop you, nothing, thought you.

Then you planted the seed and it grew so tall.

Nothing could stop it, nothing at all.

It grew stronger and stronger each and every day.

It destroyed everything that got in its way.

You cursed the day you gave it a name.

You tried to fight back, but in it came.

It consumed all it touched, even your dreams.

It left nothing behind, not even your screams.

And now that you know, you just want to shout,

"Don't ever give in to those first strands of doubt."

Positive Thinking Article Summaries & References

Want to be Happier?

Researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK have found that reflecting on happy memories for just 20 minutes a day are more cheerful. Writing about happy memories also improves self esteem, according to studies by psychologist Tim Wildschut. (Krakovsky 2006) Think happy, be happy—just another reason to remain positive and optimistic.

Positive thinking linked to immune response
Melissa Rosenkranz and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin published findings in the Proceedings of the national Academy of Sciences, according to Eric Strand writing for Psychology Today, that show weak immune responses in the "face of negative emotions." The impaired immune response was only present when experimental subjects were given the task of writing about emotionally negative or disturbing moments in their lives. (Strand 2003)

Lung ills linked to thoughts of self-harm
According to the reports of a team of researchers led by Renee D. Goodwin of Columbia University, thoughts of suicide and self-harm are held far more often by sufferers of lung disorders, such as asthma, than by people treated for other physical illnesses. (Bower 2003) The mind/body connection cannot be ignored. Pythagoras said, "Above all else, know thyself." We believe that you cannot know yourself until you accept, embrace and love your true self! This much is for sure, loving yourself is definitely connected with health, happiness and longevity.

Living with an attitude
The headline read, "Staying Alive with Attitude" and the article detailed the findings of Yale University psychologist, Becca R. Levy. Scientific data demonstrated the powerful influence of attitude on life expectancy….surprise, surprise. Subjects with a positive attitude and outlook about aging outlived those with a dim view on life as a senior by 7 1/2 years. According to Levy, "These individuals positive self-perception prolonged their lives." (Bower 2002)

The bright side of things
New research by Deborah D. Danner supports a growing body of research that shows how important attitude is to health and longevity. Danner of the University of Kentucky in Lexington and her colleagues, who published their findings in the May Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, demonstrated evidence that "expressing happiness, interest, love and other positive feelings enhances physical health."

Attitude Determines Attitude

A poem by an unknown author:

ATTITUDE DETERMINES ATTITUDE

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight.

I have responsibilities to fulfill today.

I am important. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don't have more money or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn't give me when I was growing up or I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friends or I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or I can shout for joy because I have a job to do.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or I can feel honored because the Lord has provided shelter for my mind, body and soul.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping.

What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of day I will have!

Have a Great Day ... Unless you have other plans.

Happiness Is a Decision; Choose to be Happy

By Mel Kaye

Everything depends on your attitude, even happiness. Attitude is the underlying force in your life. Everything we do and everything we feel are both decisions and choices that affect our attitude. At any point during the day we “decide” based on our available “choices” what happens next. Happiness is no different. It sounds trite, I know, but you can decide at any time to choose to be happy or to choose to be unhappy.

As an example; you are excited about a day of outdoors activity, but it rains. At this point you have choices: You can choose to be miserable and unhappy all day for the anticipated pleasure that is lost; or you can choose to look at the rainbow and marvel at its beauty; you can choose to read and enjoy a good book; you can choose go see a movie; you can choose to be with your significant other and be thankful for their presence; you can choose to create something; you fill in the choice……or you can choose to be miserable. It really is up to you. You must learn to let go of disappointments (a topic to be covered in a later post.)

I believe in simplicity which is why I won’t go into a long essay on the subject. As reinforcement, I have put forth quotes that, in different ways, say the same thing: Happiness is a decision and a matter of the attitude you choose to have.

Read the following quotes. Take the the ones that feel right to you and right them down. The act of writing helps commit them to memory and make them yours. Paste them up on your bathroom mirror or on your fridge. Put them where you can see them and continuously be reminded of them. As in my post "Are You A Monday Morning Winner," you must train your mind as you would your muscles. Repeat the quotes until they become part of you; until they become part of your Attitude, The Ultimate Power.

QUOTES:
"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances."

"Be happy while you’re living, for you’re a long time dead."

Awaken The Sleeping Attitude Within You.

Another interesting article on Attitude.

Awaken The Sleeping Attitude Within You.

by Richard Vegas

I have made the statement numerous times that; "You are the most important living person." Take some time and think about yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror and see how long you can stare without walking away. If less than five minutes, then you need an attitude adjustment.

One In A Million.

Think about it, in all of history there has never been another person exactly like you. That's scary. No, I'm just kidding. You are very unique, you are very personal, and you are very emotional. What makes you so unique? It's the sleeping giant that inhabits you.

Actually, you have two giants inside you and they are; your consciousness and sub-conscious. The conscious giant only benefits you when you are awake. The sub-conscious or the great sleeping giant is our 24/7 buddy.

What this means is; we are the product of our environment, our physical body, heredity, and our particular place in time and space. We have the power within us to harmonize with our entire environment and to direct our thoughts, and control our emotions which will ordain our destiny.

You Are A Mind With A Body.

Sounds like something from a Boris Korloff movie. But, that's exactly what we are. And, it is the greatest design in history. Our mind is made up of these two giant powers that are designed to work in harmony with all the elements of our environment.

The problem is; when these two powers inside of us are not working harmoniously together, we experience frustration and anxiety. The conscious mind is always trying to be the bully and have his way. The sub-conscious is a quiet gentleman and always trying through very soft urgings, to get us to listen to him.

Well, what do we do? The best answer is to pay attention to both, and not do anything wrong. Yeah, right. Seriously, your body can't do anything without your conscious mind having first set the stage, so, the most important thing is to listen to both and then take action.

As the movement takes place, circumstances and results, or the lack of, will tend to direct our decisions from there. As more information is gathered we will be more certain of whether we have made the right move. If not, make adjustments in our actions.

The Burning Question.

The problem is; we know how to listen to our conscious mind, but, most of the time, we don't know how to listen to our sub-conscious mind. And, it's the sub-conscious, where the giant sleeping attitude is formed that drives the action. And, without the right attitude behind the action, you'll be a few fries short of a happy meal.

The sub-conscious is the emotional powerhouse behind whatever we do. Remember, emotions are just "feelings"; the way you "feel" about something. The sub-conscious can make our actions feel like we're riding on a cloud, or gritting our teeth through the whole ordeal.

We have all done things that we did joyfully, and we have all done things that just chapped our rear.

Get To The Bottom Of It.

Well, what was the reason we got so chapped on one and did the other so happily? Was it the "act" itself? Nope, the action itself had nothing to do with it. For every action you hate, I'll bet we can find someone that loves it.

What happened was, and this is a simplified example; the conscious mind makes the decision we must do something. Then the sub-conscious tells us how to feel when we do it. Now, here is where the war begins.

The conscious mind does not like unpleasant feelings. And, the conscious mind gets all bent out of shape when the sub-conscious serves us up a platter of ugly feelings. Then our conscious mind gets angry and blames the job or "action" we're performing. So, we conclude, we don't like this activity. It's not the action, it's the feeling we don't like.

Not To Mince Matters.

But, the sub-conscious mind couldn't care less. After all, it never gets blamed for anything. It is just doing what it has been previously programmed to do. So "we", being the mind with a body, think it's the "action" that is disgusting.

So, we grit our teeth and do the unpleasant action; All the time thinking I detest having to do this. No, it's not the action you detest, it's the feeling you don't want. Remember, somewhere, somebody, would love to do it.

I know what you're thinking, so let them do it. Well, that's a possibility, if you can find someone who will do it for you. But, if you can't, you only have two choices. Either do it grudgingly, or "reframe" the action in your sub-conscious so the next time it will serve up a platter of happy feelings. The sub-conscious doesn't care.

The Door Of Opportunity.

How do I reframe this idea in my sub-conscious? I'm glad you asked. One good way is to look for someone who likes doing this and ask them; what is it they like about this action? If you can't find someone, then use a daily affirmation to convince the sub-conscious to feel positive emotions and send those emotions to the conscious.

Example: I love "whatever". And, from now on I will feel happy and energized when I do it. And, every time I think about "whatever", positive emotions will become permanent in my mind. Do not say things like this; I will "not" feel ugly, bad, depressed, etc. . . The sub-conscious tends to ignore the "negatives" and then reframes and reinforces the rest of the affirmation.

Now beware, the sub-conscious is not going to serve up a dose of positive emotions on day one and make you feel like tip-toeing through the tulips. By the same token, it will not refuse to change either. It just has to be persuaded convincingly that the conscious mind wants to feel differently. And, depending on how much you really detest this action, could take varying amounts of time to change it.

Most any emotion can be changed in thirty days with this affirmation technique. It is amazing, but you can actually love something thirty days from now that you detest today. Don't tell me you don't believe it, because I'll bet there is someone reading this that never thought they would love vegetables. When I was a kid I thought I would live off hamburgers the rest of my life.

Egg On My Face.

Why, I used to cuss vegetables. I thought they were a Chinese conspiracy sent over here to make Kudzu vines grow in my belly. And, wouldn't you know it, today, I'm a vegetarian. Go figure.

Change Your Life, Change Your Attitude

In my continuing effort to stay focused on Attitude I came across the following article. It falls into my perspective on attitude, so I thought I would share it with you. As always, I welcome any comments and suggestions.

Change Your Life, Change Your Attitude

“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”
-
Sir John Lubbock

Creating and maintaining a positive attitude is the most efficient and low-cost investment one can make in order to change their life. A positive attitude is a habit and must be learned through repetition and conscious effort on your part.

A positive attitude is not dependent upon your genetic composition. It depends upon your decision to face your world with enthusiasm and to create a positive environment.

We are faced with millions of challenging situations throughout our personal and professional lives. Many provoke physical or emotional pain and suffering. Can you tell me which of these situations will be made easier by being depressed, critical, bitter, angry or apathetic? None of them.

By accepting the reality that we will be faced with many challenges in life, and that we must seek solutions, it becomes obvious that creating and maintaining a positive attitude can only help us. Our problems remain the same size, it does not matter if you react with bitterness or enthusiasm, it doesn’t change the problem.

What we alter with a positive outlook, is our ability to accurately measure the situation and create appropriate solutions. If you choose to maintain a positive attitude you are no longer a helpless victim of circumstance, but an active participant in the creation of opportunities and solutions.

  • A positive attitude stimulates creativity and creates opportunities.
  • A positive attitude is one of the fundamental core characteristics of successful people.
  • A positive attitude will change the way you feel about yourself, your family and your job.
  • A positive attitude will change the way you approach and solve problems.
  • A positive attitude will inspire and energize others.
  • A positive attitude will affect internal physical and psychological processes that eventually will materialize in your actions.
  • Don’t confuse a positive attitude with extreme optimism. You should create and maintain a positive attitude while being realistic about your situation. It’s not about closing your eyes to the negative and ignoring the problems in our lives. That would be foolish.
  • It’s all about chosing to be enthusiastic and cheerful, and dealing with the world around us with energy and the desire to do the best we can, all the time.

“When you choose to be pleasant and positive in the way you treat others, you have also chosen, in most cases, how you are going to be treated by others.”

- Zig Ziglar

Process Of Change

For one to achieve success one must have a positive mental attitude (PMA.) I don’t think that there is much debate here. Therefore, one must “change” his/her current attitude if one truly wants change.

Change can be a very difficult process. Plus, change means giving something up. The something may be a counter productive belief, a competing strategy and/or it may also be something tangible like the fulfilling feeling food holds for some. Change means giving up what is familiar and comfortable, no matter how uncomfortable it may really be.

Whenever one gives something up, the desire to change, one must also confront the so-called unknown. The unknown being; living without the “thing” that one wants to change (give up.) This often gives rise to feelings of uncertainty. Most people are very uncomfortable when they cannot predict their own feelings or responses. They cannot predict how they will feel because they will be entering unknown territory. Fear of the unknown then becomes another obstacle in the path of one who chooses change.

The desire to change can most likely produce resistance. Resistance is the process of avoiding change. Resistance to change is quite normal.

Most people seem to feel if they allow change then “who they are” gets lost in the process. In other words, by truly becoming the person they choose to become they no longer can identify with the person they once were. This process can actually be terrifying for most of us. This is a true conflict of interest (a conflict between who we want to be and who we are.) So, on a conscious level they want to change because they are no longer happy with some aspect of who they are, and on a subconscious level they resist the change because it is unfamiliar and unknown; that which is unknown is usually very frightening. Which level of consciousness do you think will win out, the conscious desire to change or the subconscious fear of change?

Take this process to a different level, and going back to my May 6 post “Are You a Monday Morning Winner,” just the process of wanting success (a change in the way you think) cannot simply bring success. Your mind (your subconscious mind) is not prepared to deal with “success”; it is resisting with all its might. It is at the core of your being that you need to change. This is where the work begins. This is where realization of what is really needed begins. This is why, for the vast majority of us, the "success" based products, books, tapes, DVDs and seminars don’t work.

Following is the beginning of what I call the “Change Chain”: Desire to Change – Unknown – Fear – Resistance – Conflict

There is much, much more to come……………

The Race

The Race

I

"Quit! Give up! You're beaten!"

They shout out and plead.

"There's just too much against you now.

This time you can't succeed!"

And as I start to hang my head

In front of failure's face,

My downward fall is broken by

The memory of the race.

And hope refills my weakened will

As I recall the scene;

For just the thought of that short race

Rejuvenates my being.

II

A children's race--young boys, young men;

How I remember well.

Excitement, sure, but also fear;

It wasn't hard to tell.

They all lined up so full of hope:

Each thought to win the race.

Or tie for first, or if not that,

At least take second place.

And fathers watched from off the side,

Each cheering for his son.

And each boy hoped to show his dad

That he would be the one.

The whistle blew and off they went!

Young hearts, and hopes afire.

To win, to be the hero there

Was each young boy's desire.

And one boy in particular

Whose dad was in the crowd,

Was running near the lead and thought,

"My dad will be so proud."

But as he speeded down the field

Across a shallow dip,

The little boy who thought to win,

Lost his step and slipped.

Trying hard to catch himself

His hands flew out to brace,

And mid the laughter of the crowd

He fell flat on his face.

So down he fell and with him hope

He couldn't win it now--

Embarrassed, sad, he only wished

To disappear somehow.

But as he fell his dad stood up

And showed his anxious face,

Which to the boy so clearly said:

"Get up and win the race!"

He quickly rose, no damage done

Behind a bit, that's all--

And ran with all his mind and might

To make up for his fall.

So anxious to restore himself

To catch up and to win

His mind went faster than his legs:

He slipped and fell again!

He wished that he had quit before

With only one disgrace.

"I'm hopeless as a runner now;

I shouldn't try to race."

But in the laughing crowd he searched

And found his father's face.

That steady look which said again:

"Get up and win the race!"

So he jumped up to try again.

Ten yards behind the last--

"If I'm to gain those yards," he thought,

"I've got to move real fast."

Exerting everything he had,

He gained eight or ten,

But trying so hard to catch the lead

He slipped and fell again!

Defeat! He lay there silently

A tear dropped from his eye--

"There's no sense running anymore:

Three strikes I'm out, why try?"

The will to rise had disappeared

All hopes had fled away;

So far behind, so error-prone:

A loser all the way.

"I've lost, so what's the use," he thought.

"I'll live with my disgrace."

But then he thought about his dad

Who soon he'd have to face.

"Get up," an echo sounded low.

Get up and take your place.

You were not meant for failure here.

Get up and win the race."

With borrowed will, "Get up," it said,

"You haven't lost at all,

For winning is no more than this:

To rise each time you fall."

So up he rose to win once more,

And with a new commit

He resolved that win or lose,

At least he wouldn't quit.

So far behind the others now.

The most he'd ever been--

Still he gave it all he had

And ran as though to win.

Three times he'd fallen stumbling:

Three times he rose again.

Too far behind to hope to win

He still ran to the end.

They cheered the winning runner

As he crossed, first place,

Head high and proud and happy;

No falling, no disgrace.

But when the fallen youngster

Crossed the line, last place,

The crowd gave him the greater cheer

For finishing the race.

And even though he came in last

With head bowed low, un-proud,

You would have thought he won the

Race to listen to the crowd.

And to his dad he sadly said,

"I didn't do so well."

"To me you won," his father said.

"You rose each time you fell."

III

And when things seem dark and hard

And difficult to face,

The memory of that little boy

Helps me in my own race.

For all of life is like that race.

With ups and downs and all.

And all I have to do to win

Is rise each time I fall.

"Quit!" "Give up, you're beaten!"

They still shout in my face.

But another voice within me says:

"GET UP AND WIN THE RACE!"

Potential

To achieve your potential,

You know that you can;

You must make everything

A part of your plan.

Eliminate the negative,

That's in your life.

Reduce the worry,

And get rid of the strife.

Focus your energy.

Keep your goal in sight.

Be ready to win.

Prepare for the fight.

Don't be distracted.

Keep moving ahead.

Dare to go

Where no man has tread.

Winning...What Is It?

It's All In the State Of Mind

If you think you are beaten, you are.

If you think you dare not, you don't.

If you'd like to win, but you think you can't,

It's almost certain you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you've lost.

For out in the world you'll find

Success begins with a fellow's will-

It's all in the state of mind.

Full many a race is lost

Ere even a step is run,

And many a coward falls

Ere even his work's begun.

Think big, and your deeds will grow;

Think small, and you'll fall behind;

Think that you can, and you will-

It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you are out-classed, you are;

You've got to think high to rise;

You've got to be sure of yourself before

You can ever win a prize.

Life's battles don't always go

To the stronger or faster man;

But sooner or later the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can.

Are you a Monday Morning Winner?

Well it's Monday morning again and we are all ready for the challenges of the week, or are we. What have you done to prepare for the week?

  • Have you played out the week in your mind yet?
  • Have you seen yourself succeed?
  • Do you see yourself rising every time you fall?
  • Do you believe in your ability to accomplish anything that you set your mind to?
  • Do you know, in your heart of hearts, that you will never quit and you will never give up?
  • Do you have a positive attitude, an attitude that believes anything is possible?
  • Well, DO YOU?

If there is a goal that will drive all other goals it’s answering YES to all of the above questions.

Attaining and then keeping a positive mind-set is the only way that you will truly succeed.

There are many "success" based products, books, tapes, DVDs seminars and god knows what else to help excite you into buying more products, books, tapes, DVDs and seminars. If you’ve sat through any of the available seminars, and there are lots of them; it’s almost like participating in a religious revival. Their main goal is to keep you excited so that the money keeps flowing into their coffers. There are always going to be a number of participants that do achieve "success." Those are the ones who have been prepared and whose mind has been properly trained and those testimonials are usually enough to keep the "religion" flourishing. If you are like the vast majority of us, your mind has not been trained and the promised success will always elude you. I’ll have a lot more to say about this in future postings.

Now, let’s get back to making you a Monday Morning Winner.

Try a mantra as you are preparing for the week:

I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can, I know I can.

As you continue with the mantra, you will, at a subconscious level first, and then at a conscious level, begin to interject some of your goals for the week after each “I know I can.”

Do this for a bout 5 minutes.

Then follow it up with:

I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, I will.

As above, you will begin to interject some of the same goals.

Do this for about 5 minutes.

In direct contradiction to what all of the so-called “experts” say, there is no magic bullet and no “secret.”

Your mind is like a muscle, it has to be trained. If you go the gym in order to build muscles and sculpt a better body, it is a long journey, but at the end of that journey you will have the body that you desire. In the same fashion, if you want to be successful you need to train your mind to succeed. This is also a long journey. It takes work and there is no better time to begin than right now! As the saying goes, “Every journey begins with a single step.” Are you ready to take that step. You need to train your mind to both prepare for success and also to accept it when it will inevitably come.

There will be much more to come in future posts.
